Farrer Hall Refurbishment

We have breathed new life into Farrer Hall in East Dean for the National Trust.

The Hall has a long history in the village.  It was a WW1 army hut before being converted to a bungalow and moved to its current site in Hobbs Eares, a hay meadow adjacent to the village green.

Subsequent years saw it serve as a headquarters for the Boy Scouts, become a school classroom during WW2, an emergency room and the local Football Club’s headquarters until 1953. It was later enlarged, rewired and repainted and named Farrer Hall after Major A.W. Farrer who enabled its purchase after WW1.

After so many reincarnations, it was deserving of its refurbishment to preserve it for the future as our pre-works photos below show. The Hall will now be used by Park Rangers working within the area.

Our work included a complete strip out, including removal of the old kitchen and toilet. We upgraded the suspended timber floor, the walls and ceiling and renewed doors and windows and the timber weatherboarding.

A new kitchen has now been installed with low level units, worktop and upstand, plus an undercounter fridge and freezer. The Hall benefits from two new WCs, new electrics, fire alarm and heating. Where possible, original features have been retained and sensitively refurbished for re-use, including ironmongery and the external timber weatherboarding.
